A narcissist paints a picture of themselves being the victim or innocent in all aspects. No matter what they've done, they will twist the story until it seems like they were the ones hurt, betrayed, or mistreated. They’re skilled at rewriting history—leaving out key details, exaggerating others, and spinning their actions in ways that make them look like the hero or the helpless one. They’ll tell anyone who listens their version of the story first, because they know that whoever tells the story first often controls the narrative.
They can't stand being held accountable, so when you speak up or confront them with the truth, they won’t reflect—they’ll retaliate. They’ll act offended, claim you're attacking them, or say you're "crazy" or "too sensitive." They’ll deflect, gaslight, and sometimes even play the victim harder just to avoid taking any real responsibility. That’s why dealing with a narcissist is so emotionally exhausting—because they’ll do everything in their power to protect the illusion they’ve created.
But the truth doesn’t stay buried forever. What is done in the dark will come to light. You may not see justice immediately. You may be painted as the villain for a while. But time has a way of peeling back the mask they wear. Eventually, people begin to see the patterns. The inconsistencies in their stories. The trail of broken relationships, manipulated friends, and emotional wreckage they always leave behind.
Time has a way of showing people’s true colors, and when it does, the narcissist’s carefully constructed lies will start to crumble. The same people they once fooled will slowly begin to connect the dots. And the truth, no matter how long it takes, will always rise to the surface.
So if you’re dealing with someone like this, don’t waste your energy trying to expose them to everyone. Stay grounded in your truth. Let their actions speak louder than your words. Eventually, their mask will fall—and when it does, the real story will be undeniable.
