There comes a point in life when you stop asking, “Why don’t I have more people around me?” and start asking, “Why would I want more people around me?” š
Because honestly…
Why would I want to sit at a table with people who spent the entire car ride talking about the person sitting across from them?
And before anybody gets offended… if the shoe fits, please don't throw it at anybody. We’re trying to have a peaceful day. š
I’ve never understood the whole “I can't stand her, but let’s grab lunch tomorrow” routine.
Or the coworker who spends all day telling you how terrible everyone else is, then suddenly becomes everyone's best friend when they walk into the room.
Or the family member who has a whole documentary series about everybody else's business but somehow can't remember their own nonsense.
Or the friend who tells you, “I would never talk about you behind your back,” while actively talking about somebody else behind theirs.
And then people wonder why you become quieter.
It's not always that you don't like people.
Sometimes you've simply developed a very low tolerance for pretending.
There is a difference between being social and being surrounded.
You can enjoy people without needing a crowd.
You can have conversations without needing gossip.
You can laugh, have fun, go out, make memories and still choose carefully who gets access to the deeper parts of your life.
And here's the part nobody likes to talk about:
The way someone talks about other people is information.
Not necessarily because every story they tell is false. Sometimes people genuinely have legitimate issues with others.
But when someone constantly has a problem with everyone… eventually you have to wonder when your name is going to make the rotation. š
Peace starts looking pretty attractive when you've spent enough time around unnecessary drama.
You start realizing that you don't need to know everybody's business.
You don't need to be included in every conversation.
You don't need to attend every gathering.
You don't need to maintain relationships simply because you've known someone for 10, 20, or 30 years.
And you definitely don't need to sit at a table pretending everything is wonderful with someone who just spent the last hour explaining how awful the person beside you is.
That's not connection.
That's a revolving door of gossip with appetizers.
