Brown Butter, Maple Sausage, Caramelized Apple & Cranberry Stuffing
Let's talk about one of the REAL stars of Thanksgiving dinner… THE STUFFING! 🤤
Sure, the turkey gets all the attention. It gets dressed up, photographed, and placed in the middle of the table like it's some kind of celebrity. Meanwhile, the stuffing is over there quietly stealing everybody's heart. 😂
Well, this year, we're giving that stuffing a serious upgrade!
We're talking golden, buttery sourdough bread, savory maple sausage, sweet caramelized apples, tart cranberries, fresh herbs, and rich, nutty brown butter.
It's sweet. It's savory. It's crispy on top, soft in the middle, and packed with so much flavor that somebody might actually forget to pass the gravy!
And if Grandma gives you the side-eye for messing with tradition, just tell her you're expanding the family legacy. 🤣❤️
🛒 Ingredients
Serves 8–10
1 large loaf sourdough bread, cubed (about 12 cups)
1 lb maple breakfast sausage
2 Honeycrisp apples, diced
1 medium sweet onion, diced
3 celery stalks, chopped
¾ cup dried cranberries
½ cup unsalted butter
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh thyme
1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped
2–3 cups low-sodium chicken broth
2 large eggs, beaten
Salt and black pepper to taste
Optional: ½ cup toasted chopped pecans for extra crunch
👩🍳 Let's Get Cooking!
Step 1: Give That Bread Some Crunch!
Preheat your oven to 350°F.
Spread your cubed sourdough bread onto a baking sheet and toast for about 12–15 minutes, until lightly golden and dried out.
Trust me, this little step makes a BIG difference. Nobody wants stuffing that resembles wet cardboard. 😂
Step 2: Bring on the Sausage!
In a large skillet, brown your maple breakfast sausage over medium heat until fully cooked.
Remove it from the skillet and set aside, leaving about a tablespoon of those delicious drippings behind.
Because flavor, my friends. FLAVOR!
Step 3: Time for the Brown Butter Magic! 🧈
In a separate light-colored saucepan, melt your butter over medium heat, stirring occasionally until it turns golden brown and smells wonderfully nutty.
Keep an eye on it because brown butter goes from delicious to disaster pretty quickly!
Set half aside.
Add the remaining brown butter to your sausage skillet along with the onions, celery, and apples.
Cook for about 8–10 minutes until everything softens and the apples begin to caramelize.
Stir in your garlic, sage, thyme, rosemary, and maple syrup. Cook for another minute.
At this point, your kitchen should smell like Thanksgiving and happiness had a baby. 🤣
Step 4: Bring Everybody to the Party!
In a large mixing bowl, combine:
Your toasted sourdough cubes
Cooked maple sausage
Caramelized apple and vegetable mixture
Dried cranberries
Toasted pecans, if using
Drizzle in the reserved brown butter.
Whisk the eggs together with 2 cups of chicken broth, then gently toss everything together.
Add additional broth a little at a time until the bread is moist but not swimming in liquid.
Season with salt and pepper.
And yes, you're absolutely allowed to admire your masterpiece before it even hits the oven. 😂
Step 5: Bake That Beautiful Stuffing!
Transfer everything into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 350°F for 25 minutes.
Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15–20 minutes until the top is beautifully golden and crispy and the center reaches 165°F.
Let it rest for about 5 minutes before serving.
Congratulations! You may have just created a new Thanksgiving family tradition. 🦃
🍁 A Few Little Tricks to Make It Even Better!
Want extra crispy edges? Use a slightly larger baking dish to spread everything out.
Love a little sweetness? Toss in some chopped dried apricots.
Want to save yourself some Thanksgiving chaos? Toast the bread and prepare the cooked sausage and apple mixture the day before. Refrigerate the cooked ingredients separately, then assemble with the eggs and broth right before baking.
And the leftovers? Warm some stuffing in a skillet until crispy, top it with a fried egg, and enjoy the breakfast you didn't know you needed!
❤️ The Best Part About Thanksgiving?
It's not about the perfect table setting, matching dishes, or whether your turkey looks like it belongs on the cover of a cooking magazine.
It's about gathering around the table, sharing delicious food, laughing until your stomach hurts, and making memories with the people you love.
And maybe arguing over who gets the last scoop of stuffing. Because apparently, that's a Thanksgiving tradition too. 😂
So this year, try something a little different. Add some sweetness, a little crunch, and a whole lot of buttery goodness to your holiday table.
Just don't be surprised when someone asks you to bring the stuffing every single year from now on!
You've been warned. 🤣🦃🍁
Now I have to know… are you Team Crispy Stuffing or Team Soft & Buttery? And more importantly, does your family call it STUFFING or DRESSING? Because that debate could last longer than Thanksgiving dinner itself! 😂❤️
