There comes a point in life when something shifts.
You stop needing everyone to understand you.
You stop explaining every decision.
You stop worrying about whether someone is going to approve of your choices.
And you finally realize that other people's opinions are not a committee meeting you are required to attend.
Thank God. Because some of those meetings were exhausting. 😂
For years, many of us spend entirely too much time wondering:
“What are they going to think?”
“Are they mad at me?”
“Do they understand why I did that?”
“What if they don't agree?”
“What if they talk about me?”
Well…
They're probably going to talk about you anyway.
You could be the nicest person on the planet and somebody will still find a reason to have a problem with you.
You could help someone, and they'll remember the one time you couldn't.
You could set a healthy boundary, and suddenly you're “different.”
You could stop tolerating someone's nonsense, and somehow you're the problem.
And eventually, you just get tired.
Not tired of people.
Tired of performing for them.
You start realizing most people aren't thinking about you nearly as much as you think they are.
That sounds harsh, but it's actually incredibly freeing.
Most people are busy worrying about their own lives, their own problems, their own relationships, their own bills, and whether they remembered to move the damn laundry from the washer to the dryer.
You're probably not occupying nearly as much space in their head as you imagine.
And if you are?
That's their hobby. 😂
Learn to separate criticism from noise.
Not every opinion deserves a seat at your table.
Some feedback is valuable.
If someone who genuinely loves you tells you something uncomfortable, listen.
Maybe they're seeing something you don't.
But then there are people who criticize everything because apparently your life has become their unpaid full-time job.
You don't have to absorb that.
Take what helps.
Leave what doesn't.
You are allowed to have discernment without having an emotional reaction to every opinion thrown your way.
Ask yourself: Does this person's opinion actually matter?
Here's a question I wish more of us asked:
“Does this person actually have a meaningful investment in my life?”
Do they love you?
Do they support you?
Do they show up?
Do they know the whole story?
Do they live with the consequences of your decisions?
Because if someone isn't paying your bills, living your life, carrying your burdens, or standing beside you when things get hard…
their opinion may not need the weight you're giving it.
And yes, I said what I said. 😏
Stop performing for an audience that isn't even watching.
This is a big one.
Stop doing things because they look good to other people.
Stop staying somewhere because you're afraid of what people will say if you leave.
Stop pretending you're happy because you don't want anyone asking questions.
Stop keeping relationships alive because you're worried about how it will look if they end.
You don't get extra credit for living a life that looks good from the outside while you're miserable on the inside.
Nobody hands you a trophy for suffering quietly.
Build your self-worth on your own standards.
If your entire sense of worth depends on approval, you're handing other people the remote control to your emotions.
And some people absolutely should not be trusted with that remote. 😂
You don't need the room to clap.
You need to know you're proud of the person you are becoming.
You need to know you are trying.
You need to know you are learning.
You need to know you're doing what feels right for you.
That's your metric.
Let people misunderstand you sometimes.
This one takes practice.
Because when someone gets you wrong, your first instinct may be:
“But wait! Let me explain!”
No.
Sometimes…
let them be wrong.
You don't owe everyone access to your entire backstory just so they can reach the correct conclusion about you.
Some people will misunderstand you because they don't have all the information.
Some will misunderstand you because they've already decided what they want to believe.
And some people wouldn't understand you if you handed them a 47-page instruction manual with diagrams.
Let it go.
And finally, stop chasing approval.
Because approval can become a cage.
You keep checking:
Did they like it?
Are they mad?
Do they approve?
What will they think?
And meanwhile, you're slowly building a life around everybody else's expectations.
That's not freedom.
That's a hostage situation with better lighting.
😂
The older I get, the more I understand that peace doesn't come from getting everyone to agree with you.
It comes from being comfortable enough with yourself that they don't have to.
People can misunderstand you.
They can judge you.
They can disagree.
They can gossip.
They can make assumptions.
They can even decide you're the villain in a story they wrote without your participation.
Let them.
You don't have to attend every argument you're invited to.
You don't have to correct every misconception.
You don't have to prove your worth.
You don't have to explain your boundaries.
And you certainly don't have to shrink yourself to make someone else comfortable.
Live your life.
Know your heart.
Do your best.
Protect your peace.
And let people think whatever the hell they want.
Because at some point, you realize something beautiful:
Their opinion is theirs.
Your life is yours.
And I'd rather spend the rest of mine actually living it than standing around worrying about who approves. ❤️
