πŸ¦€πŸ€ Creamy Shrimp & Crab Shepherd’s Pie

Because apparently regular comfort food wasn’t fancy enough. πŸ˜‚

Traditional shepherd’s pie is wonderful. But sometimes you look at ground meat and think, “You know what? Today we’re wearing pearls.” πŸ˜‚

Enter Shrimp & Crab Shepherd’s Pie—a creamy, cheesy seafood filling loaded with shrimp and lump crab meat, tucked underneath a fluffy blanket of buttery mashed potatoes and baked until golden and bubbly.

It’s basically seafood pot pie meets mashed potatoes, and frankly, I see no downside to this relationship. 😍

πŸ›’ What You’ll Need

For the seafood filling:

  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled, deveined & chopped into bite-size pieces
  • 1 lb lump or backfin crab meat, picked through for shells
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 celery stalks, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups seafood or chicken stock
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup frozen peas
  • ½ cup frozen corn
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning, plus more to taste
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese, optional but highly encouraged 😏

For the mashed potato topping:

  • 2½ lbs Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • ½–¾ cup warm milk or half-and-half
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Sprinkle of Old Bay or paprika for the top

πŸ‘©‍🍳 Let’s Make It

Heat your oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Boil the potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain them well, then mash with the butter, warm milk, sour cream, cheese, salt and pepper.

And yes, you could use instant potatoes.

Will I report you?

No.

Will somebody's grandmother sense a disturbance in the universe?

Possibly. πŸ˜‚

Set those beautiful potatoes aside.

Now melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and celery and cook until softened, about 4–5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook another 30 seconds.

Sprinkle in the flour and stir for about a minute. Slowly whisk in the stock, followed by the heavy cream.

Add your Old Bay, paprika, garlic powder, Worcestershire and lemon juice. Let everything simmer gently until the sauce thickens.

Now add the shrimp and cook just until they're beginning to turn pink, about 2 minutes.

Remove the skillet from the heat and gently fold in the crab meat, peas, corn and cheddar.

Be gentle with that crab. We paid good money for those lumps—we are NOT turning them into crab confetti. πŸ˜‚πŸ¦€

Taste and adjust your seasoning.

Pour the seafood mixture into your baking dish and spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top.

Use a fork to make little ridges in the potatoes. Those peaks get beautifully golden in the oven, and we appreciate a little crispy potato architecture around here.

Sprinkle with Old Bay or paprika and a little extra cheese if you're feeling dangerous.

Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, until the filling is bubbling around the edges and the potatoes are lightly golden.

For an extra-browned top, broil for 2–3 minutes at the end—but watch it closely because broilers go from “needs another second” to “call the fire department” with absolutely no warning. πŸ˜‚πŸ”₯

Let it rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

πŸ¦€ A Little Seafood Mama Tip

The biggest secret here is don't overcook the seafood.

The shrimp only need a head start before baking, and the crab is already cooked. Adding the crab after removing the sauce from the heat helps keep those beautiful lumps intact.

And if you're a Maryland seafood person who believes Old Bay should be measured with your heart instead of a teaspoon?

I know my audience. Proceed accordingly. πŸ˜‚❤️

Serve this with a simple green salad, roasted asparagus or crusty bread for scooping up every last drop of that creamy seafood sauce.

Comforting. Creamy. Buttery. Cheesy. Loaded with shrimp and crab.

Basically traditional shepherd’s pie went down to the Chesapeake Bay for the weekend and came home with a whole new personality. πŸ˜‚πŸ¦€πŸ€

Enjoy! ❤️
